Director, Family Services Durham

Reporting to the Commissioner of Social Services, the incumbent will:

  • Develop new initiatives while maintaining the effective administration of the Division and while ensuring prioritization of needs that are consistent with Regional directives
  • Researching immediate and projected community and client needs and potential development of improved services through consultation with other service providers and stakeholders
  • Maintain the various divisional programs such as Marriage, Family and Individual Counselling, Adult Protective Services, Partner Assault Response and Employee Assistance Program.
  • Ensure high standards of clinical practice and professional standards are maintained in the delivery of service and develop appropriate policies and procedures.
  • Mentor and coach the performance and activities of staff while developing planning and management procedures and strategies with the management team
  • Provide advice and serve as a key member of the Department of Social Services Executive team while working cooperatively with other Regional Departments and Directors
  • Determine the budget and manage the financial resources for the division in a fiscally responsible manner The successful applicant will possess:
  • A Master’s Degree in Social Work or other comparable post-graduate degree along with management and counselling training
  • Professional credential or certification (e.g. Registered Social Worker (RSW), Registered Psychotherapist (CRPO), etc.)
  • A minimum of 5 years of progressive management experience in a public sector service
  • Several years of clinical experience
  • Knowledge of Social Work and counselling theories and practice, as well as community systems such as Legal, Health, Social Services, Government, Employment, Educational, etc. and a broad understanding of the laws governing each system
  • Experience and training in Social Policy theory and practice
  • Solid understanding of management theory and practices including change management strategies and leadership theory
  • Superior supervisory and management skills combined with the proven ability to lead and build relationships in a people centered environment
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills that permits you to effectively present information both internally and to interact constructively with external parties
  • Strong analytical and negotiation skills complimented by organizational and time management skills
