How do I become a Registered Marriage and Family Therapist  (RMFT)?
To use the RMFT designation you must be a Clinical Member with The Canadian Association for Marriage and Family Therapy. 

How do I become an AAMFT clinical fellow?
To become an AAMFT clinical fellow, you need to have completed an advanced degree program in Marriage/Couple and Family Therapy or in a related field of studies.  See the AAMFT website ( for more details.

What advanced degree programs are accepted for AAMFT clinical fellowship?

**Please note that in order for a degree to be considered as a “qualifying graduate degree” it must be an integrated course of study which must include five (5) of the core courses from any of the five (5) educational requirements. The degree must also include a practicum of at least 300 clinical hours. The five areas are:

  • Marriage and Family Studies
  • Marriage and Family Therapy
  • Human Development
  • Professional Ethics in Marriage and Family Therapy
  • Research

This requirement is not intended to infer that all five courses can be fulfilled in any one area, but rather, five courses are accepted from a combination of all of the core areas.

**For Canadian Applicants: in order for a degree to be considered as a “qualifying graduate degree”, the school needs to be BOTH affiliated with the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC) or be affiliated with an AUCC accredited college or university, and fulfill the aforementioned educational requirements. 

How do I obtain the additional advanced degree courses required for AAMFT clinical fellowship?
Advanced degree courses or course equivalents are able to be completed through the Certificate in Marriage and Family Therapy program, Open Learning, University of Guelph, as well as through advanced degree programs in related fields of study including a number of online advanced degree programs. To ensure that your advanced degree course or course equivalent will be accepted by AAMFT Membership, you need to contact AAMFT Membership with course titles and course descriptions.

What are the supervision requirements to become an RMFT?
You need 1000 hours of clinical work with 200 hours of supervision by an AAMFT approved supervisor, with at least half of the required hours in individual supervision.
