Presenter Biography

Dr. Robert Allan is a Canadian couple and family therapist from Halifax, Nova Scotia. In 2014, he moved to Denver, Colorado to accept a position as an Assistant Professor in the couple and family track of the graduate counseling program at the University of Colorado Denver. He completed his Master’s degree at Acadia University and PhD at Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia. Robert has worked in a variety of clinical settings in Nova Scotia and currently maintains a private practice in Denver. He is an AAMFT Approved Supervisor and is also certified by the International Centre for Excellence in Emotionally Focused Therapy (ICEEFT) as a therapist and supervisor.

During this webinar participants will learn about Cultural Adaptations and EFT:

Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) is an evidence-based approach to working with couples. Rooted in attachment and emotion theory, EFT has a breadth of outcome and process research demonstrating effectiveness with reducing couple distress and the process variables that contribute to change in couple therapy. Robert has a long-standing interest in EFT as a therapist, supervisor, and now in his teaching and research work. This presentation will outline some of the results from his research exploring whether EFT therapists make adaptations in their work with culturally diverse couples and what those adaptations are. In this webinar, participants will learn about the practices of other EFT therapists working with diverse couples. Participants will also examine how an awareness of culture can deepen safety in our work with couples. There will be an opportunity to discuss and share our own experiences with our couples’ therapy work.
